Milkwood is situated two hundred metres from the beach, the best Zinkwazi has to offer. At low-tide the children can take their buckets and boards and spend the entire morning catching fish in the rockpools or safely testing their wave prowess. Because there is a sandbank at low tide, little ones can really enjoy the water without getting hurt. At high tide, it's the surfers' turn - Zinkwazi is well known for its surf; and for its fishing.
A 10-minute walk north will take you to the main beach, which is a pilot Blue Flag beach, with shark nets and gorgeous rock pools. You can have coffee on the deck here, or you can order a pizza at Proud's Pizza, an innovative container-turned-pizza-parlour project piloted by Proud, a local man who truly makes the most scrumptious pizzas you will ever eat. He takes cash or card, and is always working.
Both beaches were made for walking/running on - safely. The entire village of Zinkwazi is, in fact, a safe place for families to holiday; but South Africa being what it is, please always take care. Enough said.
Milkwood Cottage is a peaceful, nature-lover's haven, where vervet monkey, bush-baby and birdlife abound. It is situated at the end of a quiet road in the village of Zinkwazi Beach, on KwaZulu-Natal's Dolphin Coast.
There are two units on this coastal property: the first is a two-sleeper, separate from the main house and, being an upstairs unit, has marvelous views of the tree canopy and ocean. Guests enter the unit via one flight of stairs. There is a wooden deck overlooking the sea and glass sliding doors leading into the accommodation. The deck is partially covered and has a teak coffee table and chairs.
In the unit, there is everything a single person or a couple could want or need to make their stay a joy, including a fully-equipped kitchen with a microwave, fridge, induction cooker, crockery, cutlery, even a water machine. There is a sink for washing up, and free wi-fi.
There is a separate bathroom with a shower, and a separate toilet, downstairs. These bathrooms are exclusively for the use of our guests. There is no TV or DSTV in this unit. The unit is comfortable for an overnight stay - or even a week's getaway for two.
Milkwood House is available for families and sleeps six. This is a beautiful choice for guests with children, as there is a pool (with a net) partially shaded by a large milkwood tree, which children usually can't resist climbing!
This spacious home has a dining room with a huge dining table, a lounge, and a basic but practical self-catering kitchen, which leads out to the back garden, which is surrounded by coastal bush.
There are four bedrooms, and two-and-a-half bathroms. The first bedroom has a single bed; and the second bedroom, a double bed. The third bedroom overlooks the pool area, with an en-suite bathroom, and sliding doors leading outside. In the fourth bedroom are two single beds; this room also overlooks the pool and has a sliding door leading outdoors.
The house is tiled throughout; linen and towels are provided.
The house is secure, with trellis doors throughout, and an alarm system. There is safe, off-street parking as well.
Information on TV, internet and other facilities:
There is no TV, however both units have Wifi.
There is a pool which guests are welcome to use.
There is a beauty spa on-site, which offers facials and massage therapy - please enquire for more details.
There is a nature reserve with wonderful walks, a hundred metres from the property - the birdlife in Zinkwazi is abundant; guests are welcome to ask for a local bird checklist; we can also put you in touch with a local bird guide who will bring the birds of Zinkwazi, and local areas, alive with her wealth of knowledge of fauna and flora.
In the village of Zinkwazi there are several choices for eating out:
Ocean Reef Hotel, which restaurant overlooks the pool and sea, and offers a kiddies menu; Lagoon Lodge, which has a restaurant and sports bar, and also offers children's meals; and the local Zinkwazi café, which offers basic breakfasts and lunches, and is run by a wonderful couple. Don't forget Proud's Pizza - he's on the beach and he is one of the hardest working men around, with a gift for pizza-making.
Northwards there are the nature reserves and further north, Mozambique. Kosi Bay, Sodwana Bay, Hluhluwe, Tugela Mouth...all these are within driving distance from Milkwood.
King Shaka International Airport is a 40-minute drive from us; Durban is 80 kilometres away.
Churches: there are many wonderful churches on the Dolphin Coast; but two we'd recommend are Grace Church in Blythedale (20 minutes away) and Shalom Ministries in Greytown (100km away via the R74 through Stanger).
We don't do airport transfers or organise trips; but we can advise you on how best to go about it.
Most of all, Bem Vindo! (Welcome - in Porguese)
We are a family of eight, with a home in Zinkwazi; but our hearts are in Africa. We have a travelling ministry to our own children for now, living by faith and not by sight, and thankful to be together, and healthy again. We believe life is a good gift from a good God, and that we are all called to live with passion and purpose.
